James McFarling, Declaration of Homestead, 3 August 1887, Napa County, CA Homestead Book B:93.

Know All Men by These Presents; That I James McFarling of the County of Napa and State of California do hereby certify and declare that I am married, and that I do now reside with my Family on the lots of land and premises Situate in the said County of Napa and State of California, bounded and described as follows, Commencing at the Middle of Napa River where the Easterly line of E.M. Yorks land crosses said River running thence in a northerly direction along said line to the lands of Charles Krug; thence in a westerly direction along the line of said Krugs land to within one rod of the corner of John Gillams land; thence in a southerly direction and parallel with said Gillams line to the middle of Napa River; thence down the middle of said River to the place of beginning containing thirty (30) acres more or less - Being the same tract of land conveyed to said James McFarling by E.M. York & wife by Deed dated Decr 19th 1862, also that other tract of land lying adjoining the above tract and described as follows, to wit: Commencing at a stake at the most northerly corner of the above described tract; thence N. 34 1/2 degrees E. 6.38 chains to a Stake on the hill from which a black oak bears south Easterly 1.??? links distant; thence south Easterly to a Stake on a point in the Bale grant line and surveyed by C.C. Tracy, where the South Easterly line of the above tract, would if extended Easterly, strike said point in said Bale Grant line, from which stake a manzanita tree 18 inches in Diameter bears N. 14 degrees W. 17 links distant; thence S. 34 1/2 degrees W. 15.9 chains to a State on the N.E. corner of the above tract thence along the north Easterly line of said tract to the place of beginning, containing fifteen 15 acres more or less. And that it is my intention to use and claim the said lot of land and premises together with the dwelling-house thereon, and its appurtenances, as a Homestead and I do hereby select and claim the same as a Homestead, under the provisions of an Act of the Legislature of the State of California, entitled "An Act to amend An Act to Exempt the Homestead and other property from forced sale in certain cases passed April twenty-first, one Thousand Eight hundred and fifty-one, approved April 28th 1860," and of the several Acts amendatory thereof and supplementary thereto. County of Napa On this third (3d) day of August A.D. one thousand Eight hundred and seventy-two before me David McClure, a notary Public, in and for said Napa County, duly commissioned and sworn personally appeared the within named James McFarling whose name is subscribed to the annexed Instrument, as a party thereto, personally known to me to be the individual described in and who Executed the said annexed Instrument and said James McFarling acknowledged to me that he Executed the same freely and voluntarily, and for the uses and purposes therein mentioned.
