Washington County Surveyors Records, 1781-97

 

27 May 1785 - Surveyed for John Finley three hundred and twelve acres of land in Washington County by virtue of a Certificate from the Commissioner for the district of Washington and Montgomery Counties and agreeable to an act of the Assembly vc, lying on the head waters of the East Fork of Wallaces branch the waters of the South Fork of Holstein River, Beginning at a white oak and two poplars on the South side of a chestnut ridge and running thence S 40 E 116 poles to a white oak by a valley; S 1 W 68 poles to two white oaks by said valley; S 36 E 176 poles to a black oak and two Dogwoods; N 34 E 5 poles to a chestnut and Dogwood corner to Gilbert Watrous land & with his lines; S 26 E 73 to a chestnut; S 19 W 60 poles to a chestnut stump; S65 W 58 poles to a black oak sapling near the top of a ridge in a line of George Finleys land and with the same N 17 W 45 poles to a black oak and two poplars N 71 W 80 poles to a forked Dogwood and white oak; N 35 W 64 poles to a sugartree and white walnut; N 22 E 220 poles to two chestnuts from one root on the first mentioned ridge; N 29 E 188 poles along said ridge to the Beginning.

We the Commissioners for the district of Washington and Montgomery Counties do certify that John Finley is entitled to 400 acres of land in Washington County lying on the waters of the North Fork of Holstein River to incllude the improvement having proved to the Court that he was entitled to the same by actual settlement made in 1774. Given under our hands this 1st day Septer 1781.

28 May 1785 - Surveyed for George Finley one hundred and eighty acres of land in Washington County by virtue of a Virginia Land office Treasury warrant lying on both sides of Wallaces branch the waters of the North Fork of Holstein River Beginning on a line of George Finley's settlement survey running

N 84 W 336 poles crossing Wallaces branch to two chestneuts at the head of a hollow near the top of a ridge

N 42 W 33 poles to four black oaks by the head of said hollow

N 36 E 80 poles to a Poplar on a spur

N 88 E 260 poles crossing said branch to two chestnuts from one root corner to John Finleys land and with a line thereof

S 22 E 134 poles to the Beginning

27 May 1785 - Surveyed for George Finley three hundred and seventy acres of land by virtue of a Certificate from the Commissioners for the district of Washington and Montgomery Counties and agreeable to an act of the General Assembly vc, lying in Washington County on the East Fork of Wallaces branch the waters of the North Fork of Holstein river Beginning at three white oaks on the North side of McFerrans ridge, thence S 19 W 123 poles to a white oakd sapling and black oak, S 5 E 17 poles to a dead black oak two poplar ??? to John McCullocks land with the lines thereof; S 41 E 74 poles to a black oak and dead chestnut; S 8 W 98 poles crossing the branch to two white oaks at the foot of Walkers Mountain thence leaving said line; S 82 E 64 poles to two black oaks by a ??? of the Mountain; N 55 E 80 poles passing Watrous corner to a black oak & two Poplars thence with John Finle's line; N 17 W 80 poles to a forked Dogwood and white oak; N 35 W 64 poles to a sugartree and white walnut by a field; N 22 W 86 poles, thence leaving John Finley's lines and with a line of George Finley's other survey; N 84 W 76 poles to the Beginning

We the Commissioners for the district of Washington & Montgomery Counties do certifie that George Finley assignee of Robert Breckenridge assignee of Wm Cocharan who was assignee of John Lewis who was assignee of Henry Willis for four hundred acres of land in Washington County lying on the waters of the North Fork of Holston river to include his improvement he having proved to the Court he was entitled to the same by actual settlement made in 1781.

14 November 1796 - Survey for George Finley Forty four acres of land in Washington County by virtue of a Virginia Land office Treasury Warrant No. 1765 and dated the 20th day of June 1782 lying on the waters of the Middle Fork of Holstein River and bounded as followeth to wit, Beginning at a black oak corner to said Finley's adjacent survey with the lines of the ??, thence S 21 W 69 poles to a black oak on the point of a ridge; S 54 W 220 poles passing said Finley's corner to a line Ahen's land then with the same S 63 E 184 poles to three chesnuts from one root on a steep hillside; N 28 E 34 poles to a chestnut & spanish oak near a spring; S 17 E 34 poles to a line of Glenn's land & with the same; N 28 E 143 poles to a black oak & chestnut Smith's corner & with his line; N 80 W 20 poles to a red oak on the point of a ridge; S 56 W 66 poles to the Beginning.

14 November 1796 - Surveyed for George Finley Sixty eight acres of land in Washington County by virtue of a Virginia Land Office Treasur Warrant, No. 1765 and dated 20the day of June 1782 lying on Harklin's Still Creek a South branch of the North Fork of Holstein River Beginning at a large black oak on the South side of a ridge, thence N 30 E 66 poles to a spanish oak on a hillside; N 52 E 34 poles crossing said creek to a white oak corner to Carson's land; S 63 E 100 poles to a white oak corner to Hugh Miller's land, near his spring & with his line S 12 W 102 poles to a white oak in a line of said Finley adjacent survey & with the same; N 46 W 55 poles to a white oak on a spur of the Mountain N 74 W 92 poles to the Beginning
