952/29 January 1770 - Ordered that John Davis, George Finly, Lanly Armstrong, Alexander Breckinridge & Josiah Gamble or any three of them being first sworn appraise the Estate of Edward Sharp deceased and make report to next Court.

 

957/26 February 1777 - John Finly makeing it appear to the satisfaction of the Court of Washington County that he upon the twentieth Day of July 1776 received a wound in the Thigh in the Battle fought with the Cherokees near the great Island and it now appears to the said Court that he in consequence of said wound is rendered unable to gain a living by his Labour as formerly, therefore his case is recommended to the consideration of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

 

962/27 May 1777 - Robert Craig Foreman, Robert Buchanan, Andrew Buchanan, Samuel Buchanan, Robert Edmondson, William Kennedy, Andrew Colvill, Samuel Briggs, John Sharp, Alexander Breckinridge, Andrew Edmondson, George Finley, William Edmondson, David Gatgood & John Loveless were sworn a Grand Jury or Inquest for the Body of this County and having received their charge retired from the Bar to consult of their verdict and afterwards returned into Court and presented as followeth, Miss Margaret Drummon for having a Bastard Child & James Bryant for not having the Road in good Repair he is surveyor of, And then the Grand Jury having nothing to do further were discharged.

 

969/30 September 1777 - On motion made for a road from the Court House to the Rich lands on Clinch. Ordered that James Fowler, Rice Bowen, David Ward & William Bower view the Road from the Rich lands by the Maiden Springs & so on to the Gap of the Laurel Fork of the North branch of Holston and Abraham Crabtree, John Fowler and George Finly from said Gap down the Valley to the head of fifteen mile Creek and so on to the Court House and make report to the next Court of the convenience & inconvenience of the said proposed way.

 

970/30 September 1777 - George Finly produced a claim for two pounds fifteen shillings for a saddle he lost in the Expedition against the Shawneese.

 

971/30 September 1777 - On motion of Elizabeth Young & William Davis certificate is granted them for obtaining administration on the Estate of James Young deceased giving Security. Whereupon they together with James Thompson, John Campbell & George Finly entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of One thousand pounds for the faithful administration of the said decedants Estate.

974/25 November 1777 - A Grand Jury of Inquist for the Body of this County, Viz. Aaron Lewis Foreman, Andrew Willoughby, Samuel Newell, James Piper, John Vance, Samuel Evans, John Willson, Andrew Cowan, David Gatgood, Tobias Smith, John Loveless, James Dulany, John Sharp, James Fulkison, Joseph Gray, Samuel Willson, Thomas McCullough, Henry Smith, George Finley, David Dryden, William Robinson, Joseph Martin, John Berry & James Leeper, were sworn and having got their charge went from the Bar to consult of their presentments.

 

981/18 March 1778 - A Jury sworn to try the cause depending between the Common wealth of Virginia Plantiff & Peter Reazor Defendant Viz. William Bowen, James Kerswell, Robert Wilson, David Ward, James Fowler, John Rodgers, John Logan, Abraham Goodpasture, Thomas Price, Thomas Berry, John Cusick and George Finley, Returned Verdict for Plantiff and assess the Damage at one Hundred pounds and two years imprisonment and his expenses to be discharged out of his fine which is ordered to be recorded.

 

1032/20 May 1779 - Ordered that James Fulkison Gent. be recommended to his Excellency the Governor as a fit and proper person for a Captain of the Militia of the County of Washington Levi Bishop & George Finley for Lieutenants & John Beatie for Ensign.

 

1056/20 June 1780 - A Bill of Sale from George Finley to Gilbert Watson Exhibited in Court and proven by the Oaths of William Greer and Hugh Brison and Ordered to be Recorded.

 

1058/20 June 1780 - A Jury Sworn to Value Nine Bushells of Tie at the Suit of Andrew Kincanon agains William Tredaway (Viz) Elisha Dungins, David Snodgress, William Lowry, Allexander Montgomery, Joseph Gray, John McCauly, Edward Stephenson, John McClung, Andrew Cowan, William Cowan, Allexander Barnet and George Finley Returned Verdict for Plantiff and assess the Damages to two Hundred and seventy pounds and ordered to be Recorded.

 

1064/24 November 1780 - The last Will and Testament of Thomas McCullock Deceased was Exhibited in Court and proven by the Oaths of Robert Campbell and Thomas Scott witnesses thereto and Ordered to be Recorded. Whereupon Isabella McCullock Executrix and John McCullock Executors therein named made Oath thereto and they together with Benjamin Estill, George Finly and John Kinkead their Securitys entered into and acknowledged their bond in the Sum of Sixteen Thousand pounds for the faithfull administration of the said decedants Estate.

 

1080/16 May 1781 - A Jury Sworn to try the Cause now depending between John Allison, Plantiff and Stephen Richards defendant (Viz) Joseph Gray, George Finley, James Logan, Hugh Berry, Andrew Millar, James Douglass, George Clark, David Taylor, Robert Cravens, Edward Stephenson, William McMullen & Daniel Reamy Returned Verdit for Defendant Ordered to be Recorded.

 

1089/20 November 1781 - A Grand Jury Sworn (Viz) William Scott foreman John Berry, Thomas Berry, Alexander Breckenridge, George Edger, Andrew Davis, David Gatgood, James Logan, James Herrald, Robert Preston, William McMullen, James Craig, Samuel Duff, James Carswell, George Finley, William Gilmore, Charles Hays, Samuel Edmondson, Simeon Cotrell, John Diskins.

 

1090/ 20 November 1781 - Ordered that William Dorton, Frederick Finley, William Huston and Jonathan Wood and Christopher Cooper or any three of them being first sworn appraise the Estate of Solomon Kindrick Deceased and make report to next Court.

 

1092/21 November 1781 - Ordered that George Finley and Abraham Heiter view the nighest and best way from the Town house to the Seven Mile ford and report the Conveniences and unconveniences of the Road round Hatters field and make return to next Court.

 

1096/20 March 1782 - The Last Will and Testament of Thomas Hill Exhibited in Court & Certified by Clerk of Rock Bridge County and as no Executors being mentioned in said Will William Hill and George Finley is approved of for Executors who made Oath thereto and acknowledged their Bond in the Sum of five Hundred pounds for the faithful Administration of Said Decedants Estate.

 

1096/20 March 1782 - On Motion of Frederick Finley Administration is granted him on the Estate of Richard Stanton Deceased who made Oath thereto and Patrick Porter and Wm. Cowan acknowledged their Bond in the Sum of 100 for the faithful administration of said Decedants Estate.

 

1099/17 April 1782 - Ordered that Alexander Outlaw, Abraham Heiter, William Russell Junr., George Finley and Joseph Bates or any three of them being first sworn appraise the Slaves and personal Estate of William Campbell Deceased and make return to next Court.

 

1101/21 May 1782 - A Grand Jury (to wit) Samuel Edmondson foreman, John Campbell, Jams Craig, William McMillen, John Bradley, Thomas Caldwell, Moses Keewood, William Davison, David Beaty, Hugh Berry, George Clark, John Blackburn, Gilbert Watson, Samuel Evans, John Kirk, David Gatgood and Robert Buchanan and Returned their presentments as followth George Finley for not keep the Road he is overseer of in repair.

 

1101/21 May 1782 - Ordered that George Finley and Michael Halfacre and James Logan alter the Road from John McRandals plantation to Intersect the Road where they shall think it most convenient.

 

1104/18 June 1782 - On Motion of Elizabeth Hill she by the Consent of the Court is appointed Guardian to Rebekah Hill, Miriam Hill, James Hill, Sarah Hill, Eliz. Hill and Thomas Hill, Orphans of Thomas Hill Deceased whereupon she together with George Finley and David Dryden her Security Entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the Sum of Two Hundred Pounds for the faithful Guardianship of the said Orphans Estate.

 

1105/18 June 1782 - Commonwealth against William Dryden upon the Presentment of the Grand Jury for Selling Liquors above the Rates fined according to Law. Ordered that twelve Pounds be allowed to the State Attorney for the Ensuing year. Same against Leafavour Dismissed, Same against Christopher Ackland fined according to Law, Same against John Yancy same, Same against Ann Meek, same, Sane against Isaac Roman same, Same against James McElwee, same, Same against George Finley Dismissed, Same against William Robinson Dismissed.

 

1106/16 July 1782 - Ordered that Summon Issue in behalf of George Finley for John Jekis to appear at next Court concerning the boundary lines of their Lands.

 

1108/16 July 1782 - A Jury sworn to try the Cause now Depending between George Finley, Plantiff, and Moses Keewood Defendant (Viz) John Bradley, David Gatgood, James Doughlass, James Craig, Richard Higgens, James Young, William Davison, William Robinson, John Wallace, David Kinkead, Andrew Millar, Patrick Watson returned Verdict Defendant which was Ordered to be Recorded.

 

1110/21 August 1782 - A Jury Sworn to try the Cause now Depending between William Cotter, Plantiff, and Arthur Galbreath, Defendant (Viz) David Watson, Jacob Hice, John Finley, Alexander Breckenridge, William Kerr, David Gatgood, Gilbert Watrson, James Crow, Joseph Snodgrass, William Scott, James Young, John Blackburn Returned Verdict for Plantiff and assess the Damage at L50 which is Ordered to be Recorded.

1112/23 August 1782 - Ordered that Thomas Watson an Orphan Child be bound to George Finley according to Law.

1133/20 March 1783 - Richard Poston Arthur Bowen George Finley Thomas McMahon Robert Crow, Levi Bishop John Patterson Joseph Bates Joseph Lester, Moses Ashbrooks and Thomas Young Logan are appointed to settle the boundary lines between John Hays and John Saunders.

1146/20 May 1783 - This day came the parties by their Attornies and thereupon came also a Jury To wit Alexander Breckenridge, Andrew Kincannon, Gilbert Watson, James Douglas, James Piper, George Finley, David Dryden, Isaac Anderson, Alexander Reid, Thomas Smith, Jacob Anderson and George Clark who being elected tried & sworn the truth to speak upon the Issue joined upon their Oaths do say that the defendant is guilty in manner and form as the Plaintiff against him hath declared and that they do assess the Plaintiff's damages by occasion thereof to thirty pounds beside his Costs; therefore, it is considered by the Court that the Plaintiff recovered against the said defendant his Damages aforesaid in manner and form aforesaid assessed & his Costs by him in this behalf expended and the defendant in Mercy & c.

 

1155/15 July 1783 - Ordered that Jonas Smith, John McRandols, Gilbert Watson and George Finley or any three of them being first sworn appraise the Estate of James Mobley deceased and make return to Court.

1169/16 March 1784 - A Bill of Sale from Samuel Cross to Thomas Grier was Exhibited in Court and proved by the Oath of John Finley a Witness thereto and ordered to be Recorded.

 

1170/16 March 1784 - Ordered that Daniel Reamy, Sampson Cole, John Ligget, John McMurry, George Finley, John Hay, Robert Crow Sen., Patrick Campbell, John Pierce, Joshua Roman, William Bates and Benjamin John be a Jury to settle the boundary lines. [Presumably on a road from the Town House to the Salt Lick and from thence up the North fork by the way of Broadford and clay Lick to the County Line]

 

1182/15 June 1784 - Ordered that William Markland be overseer of the road in the Room of George Finley.
