Downing Documents Abstracted from Allan R. Leach Correspondence -

September thru November 1987

 

"The Court proceeded to recommend the following persons to his Excellency the Governor of Virginia as proper persons to be appointed Officers of the Militia in this county, to wit, James Downing, Benjamin Pettit, Marvel Nash, Nathan Faris, Baker Ewing, William Price, and Jeremiah Parker, - Captains." Lincoln County Order Book 3:5 - August Court 1786

 

"Baker Ewing, William Montgomery, Robert Barnett, James Downing, Nathan Faris, and Marvel Nash produced Commissions from his Excellency the Governor of Virginia appointing them Captains of the Militia in this County. Whereupon they severally had the Oaths prescribed by law administered to them." Lincoln County Order Book 3:19 - November Court 1786

 

"An Indenture of Bargain and Sale Between James Downing and Nancy his Wife of the one part and Ezekial Downing of the other part was Acknowledged by the said James Downing and Nancy his wife She being first prively Examined as the law directs to be their act and Deed and Ordered to be Recorded." Lincoln County Order Book 3:545 - February Court 1791

 

"An Indenture of bargain and sale between James Downing of the one part and Matthias Mounce of the other part was proved to be the act and Deed of the said James Downing by the oaths of Thomas Copelin, Smith Mounce, & Ezekiel Downing Witnsses thereto and Ordered to be Recorded."

The area of the Forks of Dick's River church was in Lincoln until 1785 when it became part of Madison. It became a part of Garrard in 1797. There is a creek which has its headwater right behind the church in a deep valley. This creek is one of the headwaters of Sugar creek....Sugar Creek is not a branch of Dicks River.
