Finley Abstracts from the Will Parham Papers\

 

(Note: This is correspondence between Will Parham, a retired TN judge, and various individuals. They are on file at the Lawson McGhee library in Knoxville, TN. Dates following entries are the dates the letters were written. This material must be used cautiously; known errors are bracketed [ ]).

 

David Crockett license to marry Miss Finley, in Greene County, I believe. 20 March 1923.

 

John Finley III, b. 1/11/1742, m. 1762 Ann Miller of David Miller; son, William, b. 4/11/1765, m. Jean Kennedy, parent of Mary (Polly) who married David Crockett. 2 December 1928. [note: proof of Finley-Miller marriage not found]

 

Reference to marriages in Blount County, TN. Albert, Joseph W. and John M. brothers to father of Alfred Philip Finley. From Lee County, VA. William and Jane (Weldon) Finley, grandparents of Alfred Philip Finley. 31 December 1925.

 

Will of William Finley, father of Mary (Polly) Crockett in Jefferson County ... dated 4/3/1818. 26 February 1927.

 

Robert Finley deeded 275 acres on Nail's Creek to Alex Shedden in 1818 (Blount County?). W.H. Finley family in Blount County came from Lee County, VA. John Finley settled on Nolachucky River. William Finley will ... names James, Kennedy, James Kennedy, Samuel Kenny, Mary Jean (Finley) Trotter, Margaret Elizabeth, Narcissa Eveline. 22 February 1927.

 

David Crockett m. Polly Finley 12 August 1806; Crockett's mother was a Hawkins and sister to John Sevier's wife. James Kennedy Finley b. 21 December 1802. 11 March 1927.

 

From Jefferson County trip of Parham: William Finley will in Book 2:237, probated June Session 1819. John Finley m. 6/10/1811 Nancy Barn. David C. Finley m. 11/11/1819 Sally Luneford. David Crocket m. 10/21/1805 Margaret Elder [note: not so, this was a license but they never married]. This part of Jefferson was in Greene County and before that in Washington. 3/21/1927.

 

Children of John C. Finley and W. Ann (Miller) Finley: [note: unproven lineage]

William b. 1764, d. 1806, m. Jean Kennedy

Mary b. 1765, m. Joseph Sevier, oldest son of Col. John Sevier (also Gov. or TN) and wife Sarah Hawkins (she was sister to David Crockett's mother).

John b. 1767, m. Margaret Elizabeth Kennedy; John lived near Battle of Kings Mountain.

I believe my great grandfather, John Finley, the father of James Kennedy Finley, married in Washington County, VA, about 1785, but of this I am not sure. 8 June 1928.

 

Letter quote from A.F. France: John Finley, b. 17 February 1767 m. Margaret Kerr. Your ancestor, John Finley, b. 11 January 1742, son of John and Mary (Caldwell) Finley. 9 June 1931. [note: The elder John Finley here was the son of John and Thankful (Doak) Finley; John and Mary (Caldwell) Finley is diferent line].

 

James K. Finley died near 1854, as a bill of Noran Hearsell, of Louisville (Blount County), TN, against the administrator, W.H. Brickell, says ... widow, Margaret. We judge they lived ... Pickens in East end of Blount County, Edminston, Kennedy, Delaney, in West and, near Bakers Creek or Nine Mile, McMurry, Palmer, Dolozer, East and near Elijay Creek. Kenny, Nicholson, near Crooked Creek and Kidds in Maryville District. (undated)
