January 1764 - James Finley appointed administrator of Robert Finley estate. Securities: Alexander Osborn, John Dunn, Alexander Cathey (Rowan County, NC ?????). "The surprising part is that he moved from Frederick County, MD." jwj - 4/11/84

1769 - Robert Finley buys land in Catawba River area of NC (Chalkley, III:492). jwj - 12/18/83

1792 - Robert Finley will, Lincoln (Gaston) Co., NC - 4 sons all under age, 1 daughter. "Assuming he married at about the age of 25, it appears to me he was no more than 45 years of age in 1792. Actually he had to be born as early as 1746 because he bought land from Alex Osborn in 1764". jwj - 12/28/83

2 September 1770 - William Henderson will, proved 20 November 1770. Aged 71; wife (Susanna?), sons William, David, James; sons-in-law David Bell, Joseph Bell, John Leeper; Sussana Henderson, daughter of John Henderson; Susanna Finley, daughter to daughter Martha; granddaughter Jean Teas. 4 April 1766 - John Henderson will, probated 20 August 1766. Wife, Rose, son William, daughters. Witnesses: John Davidson, Robert Finley. Executors: brother James Henderson and wife's brother, John Finley. Securities: Adam Dean, William Finley. "From this it would seem Rose Finley could either be daughter of John Finley 3-02-1 or Wiliam Finley 3-02-5." (Chalkley, III:95) jdf - 6/29/83

23 January 1772 - John Shields will, freeholder. To wife, Margaret, sons John, William, Thomas, Robert, daughter Mary. Executors: Thomas Shields, son William, Wm. Hays. Witnesses: John Shields, William Shields, Wm. Hays (Chalkley, 3:132; WB 5:176). Proved 16 November 1773. "Samuel Finley, son of James, died 1796; will dated Oct 18, 1786, proven Dec 1, 1804: WB B:231. Six sons: John, William, James, Jonathan, Thomas and Nathan. He mentions a tract of land on South River, Augusta Co., VA" - from Stout who quotes France. jdf - 12/1/82

"Both William Finley and John Finley, (brothers) had sons named Robert and both Roberts had wives named Martha. Robert Finley, son of John and Thankful, married Martha Henderson, while Robert Finley, son of William is said to have married Martha Steele." jdf - 5/5/84 (also Stout, p. 61, 64)

William Finley of Wythe County by William Finley, his attorney, to William Crow, 1828 acres on east side of Bear Creek in Hardin County. Witnesses: John Rochester, Walter E. Strong (Mercer County DB 2:331). jdf - 2/3/86

28 December 1836 - William Finley (son of John 1807) will entered into probate. Tinkling Spring gravestones include William Finley, d. 28 November 1836, age 56 years and Sarah Finley, d. 17 April 1851, aged 78 (Wilson, p. 462). "Of great significance is that one John Rochester ad one Walter Strong were witnesses to documents whereby William Finley of Wythe County, VA sold land to William Crow in 1798." jdf - 1/17/84 Note: see John Finley and Louisa Strong records in Danville, KY.

"I have a theory that Rose Finley first married John Henderson, son of William Henderson and that later, she was the Rose Henderson who married William Gillespie." John Henderson's will mentions brother-in-law, John Finley. Tentatively places Rose as daughter of William. jdf - 7/17/85

1769 - John and James Finley bought adjacent tracts of land on Rocky River in Mecklenburg (now Cabarrus County, NC) from same person John and Elizabeth Mitchell), same witnesses. John Finley's tract adjacent to John Shields land. jwj - 8/16/84
