1769 - Robert Finley buys land in Catawba River area of NC (Chalkley, III:492). jwj - 12/18/83
1792 - Robert Finley will, Lincoln (Gaston) Co., NC - 4 sons all under age, 1 daughter.
"Assuming he married at about the age of 25, it appears to me he was no more than 45 years of
age in 1792. Actually he had to be born as early as 1746 because he bought land from Alex

2 September 1770 - William Henderson will, proved 20 November 1770. Aged 71; wife
(Susanna?), sons William, David, James; sons-in-law David Bell, Joseph Bell, John Leeper;
Sussana Henderson, daughter of John Henderson; Susanna Finley, daughter to daughter Martha;
granddaughter Jean Teas. Executors: wife and brother, Samuel Henderson. Witnesses: Walter

4 April 1766 - John Henderson will, probated 20 August 1766. Wife, Rose, son William,
daughters. Witnesses: John Davidson, Robert Finley. Executors: brother James Henderson and
wife's brother, John Finley. Securities: Adam Dean, William Finley. "From this it would seem
Rose Finley could either be daughter of John Finley 3-02-1 or Wiliam Finley 3-02-5." (Chalkley,

both of Augusta Co., 640 acres on Fishing Creek above Stover's (Mecklenburg Deeds, I:727-29).

Administration granted to Margaret and Thomas Shields, who qualify with Mathew Thompson,

"Both William Finley and John Finley, (brothers) had sons named Robert and both Roberts had
wives named Martha. Robert Finley, son of John and Thankful, married Martha Henderson, while

William Finley of Wythe County by William Finley, his attorney, to William Crow, 1828 acres on
east side of Bear Creek in Hardin County. Witnesses: John Rochester, Walter E. Strong (Mercer
County DB 2:331). jdf - 2/3/86
28 December 1836 - William Finley (son of John 1807) will entered into probate. Tinkling Spring
gravestones include William Finley, d. 28 November 1836, age 56 years and Sarah Finley, d. 17
April 1851, aged 78 (Wilson, p. 462). "Of great significance is that one John Rochester ad one
Walter Strong were witnesses to documents whereby William Finley of Wythe County, VA sold

"I have a theory that Rose Finley first married John Henderson, son of William Henderson and
that later, she was the Rose Henderson who married William Gillespie." John Henderson's will
mentions brother-in-law, John Finley. Tentatively places Rose as daughter of William. jdf -
