John Finleys of South Carolina, 1767 to 1842

5 January 1768 - John Finley and family (7 persons total) arrived at Charles Town on the ship Chichester, William Reed Master, from Belfast (Warren, p. 8).

(Note: The General Duty Act passed in July 1761 encouraged mass immigration to South Carolina between 1761 and 1768. The Act paid their passage and when qualified persons reached Charleston, they were given provisions, tools, and aid in reaching the land set aside for their settlement. The expense of surveying their lands, grant fees were paid "On the Bounty" by the colony, and the land was free of Quit Rent for a period of 10 years. To be eligible for the "Bounty" the immigrant had to be a protestant, either foreign or a British subject, and come to South Carolina bringing a written recommendation of his/her good character from civil or church officials of former residence. No Bounty passage was paid for persons over 50 years or under 2 [Warren, p. 1]. Fare payments to the ship captain or agent were at the rate of full fare (over 12), half fare (2-12) and free (under 2). The headright system for land distribution allowed the head of any family (male or female), and any children 16 or older, to receive 100 acres of land in their own name. The family head also received 50 acres additional land for each other member of the family - wife and minor children, indented servants, or slaves [Warren 2, p. iv].

29 September 1767 to 25 March 1768 - Bounty paid for John Finlay & family (7 persons) in the amount of 203 (pounds?); listed in the records of the Public Treasurer of South Carolina (Warren, p. 143).

13 May 1768 - Governor signed a grant for John Finnly for 450 acres (Warren, p. 49).

6 June 1768 - Hugh Finley, Esq. and Lt. Pittman embarked from Charles Town for Boston on the ship Mary (Warren, p. 332).

5 September 1768 - John Finley also spelled Finnly, recorded 450 acres in Craven County on branches of Beaver Creek, bounded E by Roger Pinckney. Survey certified 1 February 1768, granted 12 May 1768. Quit Rent begins in 10 years. Robert Fullerton for the Memorialist (Warren, p. 201). (Note: neighbors on Beaver Creek included Sarah Bell, Jeremiah Fayner (Joyner), William Johnston, John Hillary).

6 September 1768 - David Miller filed petition for survey of plat for 400 acres on waters of Waterees (Warren, p. 71) (Note: there is a David Miller d. 1816 aged 86 buried at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in York County ... see Mills' Atlas ... Theresa Hicks)

29 September 1768 - Philip Bryan and James Finlay. Survey certified 5 March 1768, granted 15 July 1768. Quit Rent begins in 2 years. Benjamin Wofford for the memorialist (Warren, p. 223).

August 1770 - David Clanton, witness for Mary McKee, testifies John Findlay, then of Beaver Creek, was another witness (LDS #0855216, SC, Lancaster County Deeds, vol. A:1787-1788).

25 March 1773 - David Miller, 300 acres on upper branches of Bever Creek, Parish of St. Marks, Craven County. Miller came to SC in 1772 with the Rev. William Martin and one of his five shiploads of settlers (Stephenson, p. 77).

14 June 1775 - John Finlay, 100 acres on waters of Dryfork on Fishing Creek on the Saludy Roads that goes to the Fish Dam forde(?) on Brodd River bounding N Cor Richd Terrels, survey certificate 30 September 1774, in Craven County, SC Archives vol. 13:509, LDS #1421458, Memorials of 17th & 18th century, SC.

11 October 1775 - William Finley registers 500 acres in Craven County, NE side of Peedee River, survey certified 25 May 1775, in Esker, p. 2.

26 February 1780 - Henry Good, yoeman, to John Finley, wheelwright, both of Craven County, SC, $2000 pounds current money, 230 acres on the North side of the Southfork of Fishing Creek joining lines with William Calley, John Ash and land formerly belonging to John Bratton, ... part of tract granted to Ephraim McLean by patent bearing date 15 November 1764 ... made over to John Davison on 25 September 1766 and from Davison to Henry Good by lease and release bearing date 6 April 1771. Witnesses: James McReynolds, Robert Good, Thos Good. Signed: Henry Good. James McReynolds appeared and made oath in Camden District, York County, SC on 3 July 1786. York County, SC DB B:44. (Note: York County was formed in 1785 from Camden and Pickney Districts) (Note: One Ephraim McLean (1768-1813) md. Elizabeth Byers was the son of Col. Charles McLean (1726-1805) at whose house the courts of Tryon Co. NC met from 1769 through 1771. This area is now in York Co., SC. A record of John Finley prior to 1789 may well be in NC ... 1783 - John Finley served on Jury in Camden District and Cheraws (Warren, p. 55). (Note: Camden was a Circuit Court District which included the Counties of York, Chester, Lancaster, Fairfield Richland, Claremont, and Clarendon in 1785)

28 July 1784 - William Barnet to Rev. Robert Findley, both of Camden District, 150 acres on north side of Cataba (LDS #855217, SC, Lancaster County Deeds, vol. A:1787-1788).

2 January 1785 - William Davies of Lincoln County, NC to Rev. Robert Findly of Camden District, SC, 200 acres (LDS #855217, SC, Lancaster County Deeds, vol. A:1787-1788).

January 1786 - A deed from John Finley to Ann Miller otherwise Hartness proved by the Oaths of John Mills and David Boyd Witnesses thereto and ordered to be Recorded (Chester County Order Book A:63 - in Holcomb, p. 23). (Note: Chester County formed 1785 from Craven, Camden District) (Note: A David Miller d. 1816 aged 86 years and is buried at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. Bethel, on the north; Bethedsa to the south; and Ebenezer to the east for a triangle on Mills' Atlas)

January 1787 - An Indenture of Lease and Release from Thomas Reaves to John Finley was proved by the oaths of John McCown & Robert Roberson Witnesses thereto and Ordered to be Recorded (Chester County Order Book A:179 - in Holcomb, p. 70).

January 1787 - John Finley served on Jury (Chester County Order Book A:211, 212, 214, 217, 223, 229 - in Holcomb, p. 82-85, 87, 90).

January 1787 - John Finley appointed to serve April Jury duty (Chester County Order Book A:180 - in Holcomb, p. 71).

1789 - Robert Finley listed as minister at Waxhaw (Jones, p. 13).

27 September 1792 - John Findley, Ann Findley (his mother) and Elizabeth Findley (his wife) of Chester County to Charles Barber of Kershaw County, 450 acres on Beaver Creek, Craven County (now Kershaw), formerly belonging to John Findley, deceased. Kershaw County DB B:162.

25 January 1796 - John Finley served on Jury (Chester County Order Book 1795-1799 - in Holcomb, p. 334).

9 February 1807 - Hugh and Susannah Davidson to John Finley both of York District, SC, $400, 100 acres ... part of 791 acres originally granted to John Davidson, Sr. in 1753 ... bounded by John Davidson, Jr., Elijah Fleming, Henry Tipping, John Davidson, Sr. Witnesses: Walter Carron, William Clinton, William Davidson. Signed: Hugh Davidson, Susannah Davidson. Delivered to John Finley, Jr. 17 February 1807. Survey diagram included. York County, DB F:764.

13 February 1813 - John Finley, Senior and wife, Ann, of York District to Reuben McConnell, $100, 21.2 acres where Finley now resides ... originally granted to Ehrem McClane(?) conveyed to Finley by Henry Good bearing date by the original patent 16 November 1764. Witnesses: Geo. Dale, Wm. Bratton, Hugh Wells. Signed: John Finley. Ann Finley, wife of within named John Findley was examined 7 May 1814. Hugh Wells gave oath 18 July 1814. Survey diagram included. 24 May 1814 - John Findley of York County to Hugh Davison of Georgia, $400, 100 acres ... part of land granted to John Davidson, Sr. in 1753 ... formerly conveyed same to me on 9 February 1807. Witnesses: Robert Davison, Hugh Black Davison. Signed: John Findley, Junr. York County DB F:522.

31 May 1820 - John Finley, deceased, final settlement, Fairfield County, names legatees, 1/3 to widow, Isham, John, Daniel, Susan, Nancy, Elizabeth Finley, Judith Ringer, Martha Gibson, each receive $599.70; named 8 slaves. Admin. = Elizabeth and John Finley. Fairfield County Book E fol 285.

7 March 1823 - John Findley probate records, Chester County, Apartment No. 20, Package No. 325; William Anderson and Elizabeth Findly, Adms., various inventories, includes notes due and rental of land on Fishing Creek to Lavina, George, Warrent Briley; 5 legatees one now deceased (17 March 1824); legatees = Elizabeth, widow and admin.; Isabel Finley (died before 17 March 1824); John A. (Alexander?) Finley; Mary Finley, married John Moore before 7 March 1823; Jane Finley married Robert Millen by 25 December 1824; Elizabeth Finley married Samuel Paisley/Peasly before 7 March 1823.

26 February 1842 - Benjamin Chambers to James Finley both of York District, $885, 177 acres on Fishing Creek ... lands of Thos Warren, William Wright and others ... plat made 6 November 1839 by John Dennis Deputy Surveyor.
