Dear Mr. Pope:
I thank you for your letter and can share with you the following.
My ancestors Papst stem from the Waldhilbersheim area (presently 6531 Guldentalin the area from Bingen am Rhine)
Johann Jacob Papst, born around 1610 in 6543 Dill, by Kirchberg/Hunsrueck, died 3/3/1695 in Waldhilbersheim, married with Elizabeth Haupt from Waldhilbersheim, she died 30 December 1679, also in Waldhilbersheim, daughter of Johann Haupt from Waldhilbersheim and Christine Theobald.
Daughter: Agnes Haupt, married 21 August 1690 in Waldhilbersheim to Johann Thomas Gruenewald from Waldhilbersheim born around 1653, died 23 June 1728 in Waldhilbersheim. He is the son of Heinrich Gruenewald from Waldhilbersheim. His mother was Catherina Gertrud.
All the above named persons were Roman Catholic. In the villages where they lived there were and are also many Lutheran Protestants so that also many of the name Papst could have been Lutheran Protestant. I have no information about this. I also don't know which children Johann Jakob Papst had besides Agnes, the daughter. The church books from Waldhilbersheim are presently being stored Bistums Archives, Trier, Jesuitenstrasse, 5500 Trier. There are, however, only Catholic Church books to be found.
In closing I wanted to find out that Waldhilbersheim did not belong to the actual county. Being that one earlier, especially with the many immigrants, all persons as county citizens considered, who came from the space between the Rhine the Mosel and the French Quarter (also even the persons from the area Heidelberg/Mannheim from the other side of the Rhine). However, I must also find out whether the family name Papst is still common in our area. It is possible that these persons have nothing to do with my ancestors of the name Papst.
I hope to have helped you a bit. For further information.
Happily at your service
Walter Oehling
