Walker and Martha Munday to Tavaneh Head, two Negroes from estate of Elizabeth
Smith, 31 July 1840, Sumner County, Tennessee, Bills of Sale 1840-1843, p. 55.
Know all men by these presents that we Walker Munday and his wife Martha Munday hath this
day bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain and sell unto Tavenah Head for the sum
of two hundred and fifty dollars our claim to half value of two Negroes (towit) a boy named
James(?) about five years of age and Milley a girl about three years of age which negroes were the
property of Elizabeth Smith decd late of the county of Sumner and state of Tennessee the right
and title to half of the said negroes we do hereby bind ourselves our heirs and assigns to warrant
and forever defend against the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whatsoever. In
witness whereof we have hereunto set our hand and seals this 31st July 1840.

State of Tennessee personally appeared before Sumner County, me Andrew(?) McGlothlin Clk of
the County Court of said Sumner County Henry Head and Pascal Head subscribing witnesses to
the above bill of sale who after being duly sworn depose and say that they are personally
acquainted with the above named bargainer and that they acknowledged the same to be their act
and deed upon the day it bears date and for the purposes therein contained Witness my hand at
office.
