Reuben Jefferson FINLEY Jr. Letter to Isaac Newton FINLEY
Carroll Co. AR May 17th 1857
Dear Brother and family and friends Once more through the providence of our creator I am ..?...
and blessed with time health and opportunity of droping you a few lines in answer to your very
kind letter bearing date April 24 which came to hand the 14th MAY? which afforded me much
satisfaction to hear from a brother and friend, it affords me much consolation to hear that you are
all well I can't wright what I want to wright for my mind is so tangled that I can't think as I
should I will now say that these lines leaves us all in good health and I do very earnestly hope they
may find you and yours and all my connection in full possession of the same like blessing.
I was sorry to hear that provisions was so scarse with you in Tenn, Shocking times indeed,
Newton, he who looks down from above and knows the secrets of my pore troubled hart. he
knows I am sorry for you Oh I dont know that I'll ever see you anymore in this world of sorrow
Blessed be the name of God, I.N. I think of meeting our friends in bright Glory, it drives back all troubles Oh that the lord would enable us all to live humble in the discharge of our duty. So when we have to die that we may all meet in heaven. I must leave this Subject, you wrote that grain was very scarce. I will now inform you that refers to on the 28 day of April old mother WALKER [Mary (Polly) Graham SEHORN WALKER] departed this life. She said she was willing to die and be at rest. papy WALKER is still shaking yet [Benjamin WALKER Jr.] I will now give you a sketch of Ark, corn is very scarse in this country it has bin selling at 50cts until lately I could now sell corn if I had it at 75 cts per bushel, in fact I know of nun to sell. I saw a man last knight who lived in Fulton County Ark 75 or 80 m. East of me he had his wagon and was trying to get grain and he had to go back with but little. James C. CHANEY [Husband of Nancy Dickey SEHORN] has just returned home from the South [dau. Mary Polly Graham & John SEHORN Jr.] part of this State and he says that the front has killed pretty much all the wheat and cotton and they are plowing up the wheat & cotton and planting it in corn I will also state that I learned a few days since that the people in a portion of Texes was starving to death this news came hear in a letter They had to go 200 miles before they could get corn and then they had to pay $2.50 per bushel The wheat in this County is injured by the frost or freeze Rather we have a very cool and backward Spring no goods? hear yet I think old Tenn is a heep better country than this. Well in Relation to our difficulty With Letty Newton I want you to keep you eyes skined and watch every crook and turn I don't see how Handcock will get Letty and her securities when she reported Milton's Estate insolvent, when I get your next I will comply with it according to direction. I don't know how times may change But I now think that I will be at Livingston in Oct next and see how things will turn up I yet remain your brother until death
