Descendants of Asa (c 1788-1853) and Esther (Gleaves) Finley
Written by Asa Wallace Finley
(1822-1910)
I was informed by my only surviving uncle, Mr. John Finley, of
Christian County, Kentucky, that our Ancestors emigrated from
Ireland to America in the year 1700 and settled in the State of
Pennsylvania; and in the course of time some of them moved from
there and settled in the County of Wythe in the State of
Virginia; and in about the year 1810 my father and his three
brothers and one sister moved from there and settled in Christian
County, Kentucky. Their names were William; Dabney; John and
Margaret. Asa was the name of my father, he was the youngest of
the family. My father moved from there to Missouri in the year
1820 and settled in Saline County where I was born on the third
day of January 1822. My parents raised two boys and three girls,
James W. Finley and Asa Wallace Finley, and Eliza, Roda and Mary
Jane. Uncle William's children all. came out to Missouri and
settled near my father, they were Ely, William, Walker and
Jerome; the girls' names were Betsy, Mary and Elizabeth. Uncle
Dabney came to Missouri with his family in the year 1835 and
settled near to my father in Saline County. They had four boys
and six girls; the boys' names were Filander, Brutus, Parus and
Thomas, The girls' names were Virginia, Margaret. Sarah, Roda
and Mary and Narcissus. Uncle John's children moved out to
Missouri in an early day also and settled near my father. Their
names were John, Milton, Dabney, and Clark. They had but one
sister her name was Susan. My dear mother departed this life
about the first of March 1839. And my father resolved to send me
and my sister Mary Jane away from home to go to school. He sent
my sister to a Boarding School in Boonsville, Cooper County,
Missouri1 and sent me to the State of Kentucky to attend the
Cumberland College near Princeton in Caldwell County. When I
returned home from College I was 18 years of age, and in the year
of 1841, I was married to Miss Sarah Campbell. Our children were
Elizabeth, Asa W., Louisa, Maggie, Mary, Charlie, Emma. Elizabeth
married H. Pascoe; Asa W. married Fanny Whistman; Louisa married
Louis Beardsley; Maggie married Joe Whistman, Mary married Joseph
Cornwall; Charlie married Lou; and Emma married J. P. Wilkes.
