ELLISON FAMILY
Chautauqua County, New York
Report No.1
BACKGROUND
Client is seeking information on Thomas Ellison who was born ca 1802 in probably New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania. She has located him in the 1840 census of Poland, Chautauqua County, New York, the 1850 census of Elk township, Warren County, Pennsylvania, and the 1870 census of Jefferson County Nebraska living with his son. Since the earliest known location is Chautauqua County the search is to focus on records of that county The purpose here was to identify the different early Ellison, and hopefully to find some common neighbors, witnesses, etc. that might signify a tie between them.

CENSUS RECORDS
Client had provided information from federal census records. At the courthouse the original state
census records of the county were located and an examination made. In particular, it was hoped
that Thomas Ellison might be found in the 1825 and 1835 census of Chautauqua, and that other
Ellisons might also be located in proximity. As will be seen, no Ellison appeared in either of
these census years. Though it consumed a bit of time since the census was not indexed, it was felt
important to examine these. And, as it turned out, the 1855 does seem to give a clue.

Note: Though this David Ellison is too young to be of client's family, nonetheless, the fact that he
was born in Orange County is helpful. Client's Thomas Ellison was not listed in 1830
Chautauqua County, New York, but client found a Thomas Ellison in 1830 Orange County who
would appear to fit. Since client's Thomas Ellison is also not found in the 1835 state census of
Chautauqua County, it is suggested that the state census of 1835 Orange County may list a
Thomas Ellison and that he may be the same one who was in 1840 Chautauqua County.

There are a number of repositories scattered throughout Chautauqua county - local libraries and
historical/genealogical societies. A trip was made to the library at Westfield which was said to
have good records.

Later, in Washington D.C., the D.A.R. library was checked for any published genealogies on ELLISON that might appear to be the right family, but none were found. At the NGS library in Arlington, Virginia a history of Orange County, New York included an Ellison biography which might be helpful. It was photocopied and is enclosed. A summary:
Portrait and Biographical Record of Orange County, New York, (New York & Chicago:
Chapman Publ. Co., 1895).
p. 591: Thomas Ellison, citizen of Newburgh, native of this county [Orange], born at New Windsor in 13, to Thomas, Sr. and Harriet (Ramsey) Ellison, the former born New York City, January 29, 1774, latter born in state of Maryland. She was daughter of Charles Ramsey, officer in the Revolutionary War. The first Ellison came to America from England in 1668, landing in city of New York. To Thomas
and Harriet Ellison were born: Mary I. who d. Sept.12, 1842, wife of Thomas James DeLancy; John d. Mar.29, 1835; Eliza d. in 1882; Henrietta and Caroline, decd; William d. age of 16; Thomas subject; and Emily, wife of John Morgan, who resides in New York City.

COMMENTS AND EVALUATION
After examining the biography of Thomas Ellison in Orange County, and trying to reconcile his
family with census records, it is noted that the subject of the biography was born in 1813 in
Orange county to Thomas Ellison (Sr.) and Harriet Ramsey, Therefore, he would not appear to be
the Thomas Ellison client located in the 1840 census of Orange County in New Windsor, with 1
m 5/10; 1 m 20/30; and 1 m 30/40; if und 5; 3 f 20/30; if 30/40. If not, who is this Thomas
Ellison? Another Thomas Ellison appears in 1840, this one in Poland, Chautauqua County p.25,
with 1 m 5/10; 1 m 10/15; 1 m 30/40; 2 f und 5; 1 f 5/10; 1 f 10/15; 1 f 30/40 who appears to be
client's ancestor.
The above biography leaves out important information. It states that Thomas Ellison died in
1724, and that he had sons John, Thomas, William and Joseph. It further states that the subject
Thomas Ellison (Jr.) was born in 1813 in Orange County, son of Thomas Ellison (b. New York
City 29 Jan. 1774) and Harriet Ramsey, However, though it calls the older Thomas Ellison (who
died in 1724) the great-grandfather of the subject, it does not state who the grandfather of the
subject was, thus leaving us no immediate information as to whether John, Thomas, William or
Joseph (sons of the older Thomas) was the grandfather of the subject. It seems possible that
client's family of Ellison could descend from one of these four Ellisons; the Thomas who
removed to Orange County (and who married Harriet Ramsey) could have had other relatives
who removed to the same county.
The print-out of client's listing of 1830 census of Orange County, New York wrapped around to
two lines, and it is not clear (on the copy received by this researcher) the age brackets of the
Thomas V Ellison in 1830 Orange county He would not be the Thomas Ellison who died in 1822
(assuming the biography is correct) and would not seem to be Thomas Ellison Jr. who would be
only about eighteen. (However, depending upon the ages in the listing, perhaps he is indeed that
Thomas.) If the information in the biography is correct, Thomas Ellison Sr. and his wife both
died in 1822, but some of the children would have been minors at the time. Perhaps there are
estate records that would be enlightening if this proves important. Who became guardian of those
children? Did a family member in New York City or Westchester County become guardian? (It is
noted that Thomas the subject spent some years in the latter county.)
Client shows the first few children of Thomas Ellison as born in Chautauqua County, new York.
It is wondered if there is documentation, or whether this was family tradition. Perhaps checking
records for each of those older children would divulge a different location of birth, such as
Orange County, New York for some of them.
An additional note: client shows a Richard Ellison as son of Thomas Ellison of her family, and
also shows a Richard Ellison in census records of Orange County, New York. This may be
significant in a naming pattern.
FURTHER SUGGESTIONS
It would appear that a thorough search of Orange County would be a likely location to check for
the earlier records of client's Ellison family,
Does client have the death certificate of Richard Ellison, who died in 1919 in California? It is
hoped that it might contain the maiden name of the mother of Richard Ellison, and the birthplace
of the parents. Perhaps the undertaker named on the death certificate would have additional
records in his file, as might the obituary if available.
